Spelthorne Young Voices was formed in February 2003 by Joanne Gardner and Emma Turnbull. It is a community-based youth choir for the Borough of Spelthorne, which is open to everyone of junior and senior school age. The aim of Spelthorne Young Voices is to encourage and inspire young singers, whilst helping them to develop good musical habits, discipline and musicianship.

September 2006 saw SYV expand to form SYV Senior & Junior Choirs.

SYV perform on a regular basis and sing a varied repertoire from gospel, classical to musicals and popular songs.

What does SYV want from its members? We are not asking for trained singers, although if you are one we would be delighted to see you! We are not looking for experienced musicians or the ability to read music. SYV recruits members of junior and senior school age, who are enthusiastic and have a strong sense of commitment and a love of music. To achieve a high standard of music it is necessary that members attend rehearsals regularly and take part in concerts. SYV are a team and every member has an essential role to play.

What does singing in a choir offer you? The enjoyable experience of learning and performing a wide and varied repertoire, whilst developing skills as a singer. It also provides the opportunity to make new friends and to work as part of a team. Singers possess a number of highly transferable skills: Members will find that being part of the choir will help to supplement their school work, whilst also promoting many qualities such as commitment, social skills, accuracy and confidence.

Where and when do we rehearse? Rehearsals are held at St Peter's Church, Staines  -  Please see map below.
Junior Choir rehearse on Wednesdays 5:15 - 6:15pm - Ages 6-11
Senior Choir rehearse on Thursdays 6:30 - 8:00pm (with break) - Ages 11-20

What do we wear for concerts? Concert uniform consists of an SYV sweatshirt and polo-shirt with plain black trousers. The sweatshirts/polo-shirts belong to the choir and will be issued to members for concerts.
Coming soon - new dresses are being made for female members of the Senior Choir

"The arts are a window on our world that can capture a child's imagination and let it grow. We should all have the opportunity to look through that window." - HRH The Prince of Wales.

This is the only opportunity of its kind in the area and the founders of the choir want to make sure that it is accessible to everyone. As such we only ask for an annual fee of £15 and to balance this, the co-founder and SYV Musical Director works on a voluntary basis taking no fee. However there are other costs of running a choir such as music, uniform, venue hire, accompanist's fee's and Choir Master fees for the Junior Choir, the printing of programmes etc. SYV are actively finding ways to make this money themselves, but they would welcome any support that could be given.
